Ethics. Building a Legal Team. Personal Development & IWD!

Hi all

Here’s our weekly round-up of Crafty Counsel content, and all the best events for in-house lawyers and their many friends that we are aware of.

Another great week of new content on our website! Thanks to our presenters. If you missed them, here’s a recap.

  • My interview on ethics for in-house lawyers with Professor Richard Moorhead of UCL. Richard co-wrote the book on ethics for in-housers, and we discussed tricky subjects such as the risks and ambiguity of ‘adding value’ and ‘being commercial’ and what more our industry bodies can be doing to support in-house lawyers on taking the big decisions.

  • Our panel for International Women’s Day, featuring Christina Blacklaws (President of the Law Society of England & Wales), Denise Nurse (Co-Founder of Halebury) and Nur Zorlu (Solicitor at Boeing UK). The team discussed what ‘Balance for Better’ means for them, and what changes regarding gender diversity they’d like to see in the Legal industry.

  • How to set up a Legal function in a high calibre start-up? Our head-to-head featuring Adam Eastell (Chief Legal & Strategy Officer at Eigen Tecnologies) and Andrew Olsen (Deputy General Counsel at Eigen Technologies). Also features a nice “how to” on how to take the mickey out of your boss for having little in-house experience…

  • Our video diary Behind the Scenes with ACC Europe at their recent Brussels seminar, reception and workshops.

  • Julia Zange, Global Head of Labor Law at Fresenius Medical Care (and Germany Country Rep for ACC Europe), delivered a 90 second Crafty Short on Human Rights for in-house counsel.

As ever, our Events page has a massively comprehensive list of Legal events in the UK and beyond. But, here are some that stuck out for us.

  • Crafty Counsel will be at The Law Society of England and Wales tonight, at one of their periodic drinks for in-house counsel. Looking forward to seeing some of you there from 17.30! If you want to go, let Priya Krishnan ( know.

  • ACC Europe are holding a Legal Operations ‘Virtual Roundtable’ next Tuesday 12 March. Participants will discuss the journey in establishing and advancing a legal operations function, and compare notes on the scope, structure, composition and roles of dedicated legal operations functions.

  • DLA Piper are talking UK and international tax changes on 12 March (London).

  • Browne Jacobson are holding an in-house lawyers’ forum on 14 March.

  • The Personal Support Unit at The (E&W) Law Society is holding a fundraising breakfast on ‘Access to Justice and how the Legal Tech Community can help’ on 25 March. As well as a fundraiser, the event will be an opportunity to share ideas on how Tech can help the less advantaged gain access to justice – which makes a change from using Tech to do marginally better document review, and surely is a worthy cause.

There’s tons more on the Events page. Really.

It’s great to see so many organisations celebrate International Women’s Day this week – and this year’s theme of achieving better balance is important for all of us, regardless of gender. Enjoy.

Best wishes
