Should in-house lawyers draw? Our latest video content!

Happy Thursday! We were at DLA Piper in London last night, filming some short interviews behind the scenes at their Legal Operations seminar as part of their WIN programme. More on that content soon! In the meantime…

This week’s content.

  • Legal Design! It’s Emma Jelley, former General Counsel of Onfido and previously a long-time in-house lawyer at Google. Emma shared her thoughts on creativity (“all in-house lawyers should draw”), design, and the Legal Tech she actually wish existed (it’s the Tech that would tell you what Tech to buy…). Filmed on location at the Alternative In-House Tech Summit (thanks guys) (6 mins)

  • Law firm relationships! It’s Simon Dodds, former Co-General at Deutsche Bank and now Of Counsel at Shearman & Sterling. Simon talked with me about trust, communication, and getting the best out of the in-house counsel / external counsel relationship. (> 5mins)

  • Influencing! It’s Dan Connors from Applied Influence Group, talking about the power of asking: “So what?” Don’t let your legal advice get smothered by indifference, take 90 seconds to think about framing your insights. (90 secs)

  • Sort your contracts! Nick Pritchett, Consultant Legal Counsel at LegalEdge and former Head of Legal at IKEA, talks through five steps for SMEs to get on top of your contracting and focus on the high value work. (90 secs)

  • Networking! We filmed a behind the scenes piece at The Law Society of England Wales’ networking drinks for in-housers. (< 2 mins)

Loads more on our website ( . But – here are some of my favourite events coming up around the UK. (All times UK)

  • Access to Justice and Legal Tech - The Law Society are hosting a fundraiser breakfast asking what Legal Tech can do to help improve access to justice. (25 March, 8.30am.)

  • Knowledge Engineering and Document Automation – Simmons & Simmons are visiting Barclays Eagle Lab in Notting Hill to talk about document automation. Warning: this is largely aimed at what happens in law firms. But, there could be some good stuff for in-housers in there. And Crafty Counsel are now based in Barclays Eagle Lab, so come say hi! (26 March, 9.30am)

  • Adaptable Intelligence for In-House Lawyers – another one from DLA Piper’s WIN programme, and looking at creative agility and emotional intelligence. (29 March, 9am)

  • Inclusion & Diversity in the workplace – hosted by RPC and with a presentation from the FCA’s Director of Market Oversight. Inclusivity (and related outputs of getting this wrong, notably sexual harassment) are firmly on the FCA’s agenda, so I do think this could be a really good one. (4 April, 8am)

Have a great World Poetry Day ( . Until next time!
