Emma Norman, Senior Legal Counsel at Invesco, shares how the asset management company’s in-house training programme evolved over time. At first the business would help junior legal professionals to qualify on an ad hoc basis, but now the company recruits two in-house trainees every year. The trainees then go through a two year in-house training programme after which they qualify as solicitors.

The advice Emma gives to other in-house legal teams looking to start formal training programmes for in-house lawyers includes setting the trainees up with a proper induction, getting all of the requirements of the roles and competencies on paper and making sure to help develop abilities other soft skills, such as doing presentations.
