Dana Denis-Smith blazed a trail when she established Obelisk Support in 2010 to provide flexible legal services delivered by ex-city lawyers, who want work that fits around their family, portfolio career or other commitments. Dana speaks with Ben about how far legal has come in widening access, keeping lawyers in the profession and expanding the range of careers and roles that can be done within the legal industry. However, Dana also speaks about the pervasive challenges facing lawyers who wish to work flexibly or even maintain the “dignity of work” as they grow more senior and are sometimes euphemistically regarded as “too experienced”.
